Le terme "vidéo" désigne l’ensemble des techniques permettant de convertir les images animées et les sons en signaux électriques (signaux vidéo) pour enregistrement, diffusion, reproduction et transmission. La vidéo numérique apparaît dans les années 1990. Les séquences sont directement enregistrées sur un support informatique. Les applications de la vidéo numérique sont par exemple les effets spéciaux utilisés dans les films ou alors les images de synthèse qui, codées en mosaïques de chiffres, peuvent être combinées ensemble et/ou transformées. Dans les foyers, la cassette vidéo est progressivement supplantée par le CD-Rom (compact disc - read only memory) et le DVD-Rom (digital versatile disc - read only memory). Le DVD haute définition apparaît en 2006. La vidéo en ligne se popularise elle aussi en 2006 avec le succès du site YouTube, qui permet à tout un chacun, amateur ou professionnel, de poster ses vidéos. -
